Getting Started

There are a couple of ways to get started with embedded development using Java. The easiest and cheapest way to
get started is with a device you already own. This is most likely your cell phone or your PDA.

  •  java.sun.com - Sun MicroSystems Official Java web site for downloading the SDK's for all things Java.
  •  Eclipse - A very high quality open source Integrated Development Environment that has very strong support for the Java platform.

  •  OCJUG - The Orange County Java Users' Group, our brethren for Desktop and Enterprise development.
  •  LAJUG - The Los Angeles Java Users' Group, also our brethren for Desktop and Enterprise development.

Components Shopping

Developing Embedded Java requires devices. Here's a list of some very useful places to shop.

  • Parallax - The Javalin chip and other robotic parts and sensors.
  • EMAC, Inc. - (Equipment, Motion and Control) - Single Board Computers (SBC), System on Module (SoM), Embedded Linux, and other components. Sells an OEM version of the TINI.
  • Maxim/Dallas Semi - Too much to list. Home of the iButton and the TINI.
  • DigiKey.com - Just about everything. One of THE largest electronics parts places.
